Twenty minutes later, Stephen accompanied Jaden and Malia to the council chambers. Though Sydney, Miguel, Vincent, and Bastet were present, as well as Commander Anhur via hologram, Malia noted that Brian was missing.

“He’s in China,” Sydney said when she asked about his absence. “They’ve seen zombie hordes in several of the cities the Malor destroyed, and Beijing wants to nuke them to contain the Anunnaki threat.”

“What?” said Malia, her eyes wide. “They want to nuke the entire cities?” Sydney nodded. “But there are still millions of uninfected humans living there! And we’re the only ones with pure fusion bombs—theirs will create nuclear fallout. Millions more could die outside the target cities!”

“And that’s why Brian’s there,” said Vincent. “We sent him to negotiate with the government. Hopefully, they’ll agree to allow us to bomb the cities.”

“What?” Malia said again. “That will eliminate the fallout, but it’s still going to kill millions of innocent people! We took out the horde in New York—send us to take care of the ones in the other cities!”

“It’ll take way too long,” said Jaden. “By the time we take out one city, the hordes in a dozen more will have transformed. And besides that, several hundred zombies still managed to transform in New York.”

“Many world governments are taking care of the hordes with conventional weapons,” said Sydney. “The remaining skyscrapers in Manhattan made it impossible for the American fighter jets to maneuver there, but in many places, the hordes have formed outside such areas.”

“Beijing has already sent fighter squadrons to the cities where that’s true in China,” said Vincent. “But in Shanghai and a few others, the situation is similar to New York.”

“Their weapons will definitely work against the zombies,” said Jaden. “And they should be effective against the newborn Anunnaki, too. We were able to kill them with our laser rifles. Once they mature, though, that’s it. It sucks to make it a numbers game, but that’s what it is. Nuke the zombies they can’t reach with an aerial bombardment, and while it may cost millions of lives, it could save billions in the long term.”

Malia shook her head. “It’s wrong.” She knew she was fighting a losing battle, but it had to be said.

“What else would you have us do?” said Vincent. “My understanding is that they disabled the fusion grenade you took to their tropical paradise, so as of this moment, we have no way to eliminate them there. At least China’s plan slows down their population growth while we figure out how to fight them.”

Malia started to reply, but Sydney spoke over her. “Stephen, can you walk us through the Anunnaki life cycle, please? I’m still having trouble wrapping my head around this.”

“Yes, of course,” he said, clearing his throat. “The scans Malia and Jaden obtained of the live Anunnaki show that they possess venom sacks, just like the zombie we captured. They must have initiated the parasitic outbreak by infecting an unknown number of humans.
